For the first time in her life, Lady Mayoress Tessa Brewer, wife of Alderman David Brewer, Lord Mayor of the City of London, learned how to tap rubber from a tree.
While accompanying her husband on a visit to Thailand last week, the Lady Mayoress also had a chance to visit families affected by the tsunami, which she said gave her an insight into the hardships they suffered.
While in Bangkok, the Lady Mayoress visited the Bhuddhajakwittaya School, a Ministry of Education model school, to present it with data-logging equipment, Then she went to Phuket where she visited some of the post-tsunami projects supported by UK organisations such as the Life Home Project, a charitable foundation that provides shelter for HIV-positive mothers and their children.
The Lady Mayoress also visited Ban Lamkaen School in Phangnga, which was affected by the tsunami. She went to see a family who struggled to survive as the wife used to work as a cleaner before the tsunami and the husband is an amputee. The family lost their income after the tsunami and were given access to a relative's rubber plantation near their house.
The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders; Forum corporate members gave them a small grant to purchase rubber-pressing machines, trays and knives to start a new business. The family showed the Lady Mayoress how to collect rubber - an activity she's never attempted before.
The Lady Mayoress said that the visit was a memorable experience.
